For most local businesses, the map pack is the homepage

Three results sit above everything else on a local search, and getting into them has almost nothing to do with your website. Here is what actually decides it.

local seogoogle business profile

Search "plumber near me" in Austin and look at what fills the screen. Ads, then a map with three businesses under it, then, eventually, if you keep scrolling, the ordinary blue links where your website lives.

That block of three is the map pack. For a business that serves a specific area, it is the most valuable real estate on the internet, and it is decided almost entirely by things that are not on your website.

What actually decides it

Google is weighing three things, and they are not equally weighted for everyone:

  1. Proximity. How close you are to the person searching. You cannot change this, and it is often the heaviest factor. This is why chasing "rank #1 in Austin" is the wrong goal — there is no single ranking, there is a different result for every street corner.
  2. Relevance. Whether your profile says you do the thing being searched. Your primary category does enormous work here, and most businesses picked theirs in ten seconds years ago and never looked again.
  3. Prominence. Reviews, review recency, mentions of your business elsewhere on the web, and whether your name, address, and phone match everywhere they appear.

You cannot move your shop closer to the customer. You can absolutely fix the category you picked in ten seconds four years ago.

The unglamorous work, in order

If you do nothing else this month:

That last one is tedious and it is why people skip it. "Suite 200" on one and "Ste. 200" on another is the kind of thing that quietly costs you.

The website still matters. It is where the person goes after the map pack does its job, and it is what converts them. But if you are spending money on the site while the profile sits half-filled, you are decorating a room nobody has walked into yet.
